Gemcutting for Beginners

Page history last edited by Third Time Lucky 15 years, 5 months ago

Gems come in two types.

Uncut gems are the common (green) type and are labelled with size 5.

Flawless gems are the rare (blue) type and are labelled with size 10.

Gems cut into 3 categories: -

Rhombic (uncut) - Trillon (flawless) - Used for One-Handed Weapons

Oval (uncut) - Teardrop (flawless) - Used for Two-Handed Weapons

Oblique (uncut) - Cabochon (flawless) - Used for Armour

Each recipe has a random chance to produce 8 different cut types, so you can't give your gem to a cutter and say "I want X gem", it is completely luck of the draw as to which of the cuts will be created.

Each cut uses a reagent that the gemcutter must purchaser from the merchant. Costs for this vary according to which level of gem you are having cut. Please ask your gemcutter for more information on the cost of the reagent.

Along with different gems going into different types of items (1h weapon, 2h weapon, armour) each item will also have a size requirement. It will either be size one or size two. You have to divide their size by 5 for it to correspond with their actual size. Therefore, flawless gems are really size 2 and uncut are size 1.

To make that a little clearer, an uncut gem will go in a green item or a blue item, a flawless gem will go in a blue item only.
